I came to the refuge on Valentine’s Day. It ended up being the best Valentine’s Day ever. I came to the refuge a "shell" - a hollow impersonation of my former self. I had spent seven years being told I was useless, being cut off from my friends and family, not being able to make choices about what I did, what I could wear or who I could see and constantly being forced to do things I didn’t want to do.
My children were permanently scared & terrified of strangers. They had witnessed things no person should ever see, let alone two little boys aged two and three.
Coming to the refuge, was the best decision I ever made. Gradually with the support & patience of staff I began to re-gain my confidence and self-esteem. My children began to relax for the first time ever and enjoyed playing & being children. This support continued when I left the refuge and moved into my own place.
I left my husband just over two years ago. This autumn I am off to university to start a four year degree. My children are excited about the move & about making new friends.
Three years ago I could never have dreamt that my life would turn out this way. Now I am living that dream.
